Children who have difficulties with sensory processing can enjoy a morning at the fair

The State Fair of Texas is typically buzzing with sounds and lights, a familiar sight seen at the historic Fair Park each October. However, not all people, such as children that have difficulties with sensory processing, enjoy the bright lights and loud sounds of the fair. That’s why for the fourth year in a row, the State Fair of Texas is hosting three sensory-friendly mornings.

The sensory-friendly mornings will take place on October 5, October 12 and October 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Organizers at the State Fair of Texas said their goal is to provide a family-friendly environment for all and by adding the sensory-friendly mornings to its schedule allows the fair to be more accessible. During the sensory-friendly mornings, organizers have made adjustments across the fairgrounds to accommodate those with sensory sensitivities. Leaders at the fair collaborated with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards and other local organizations to create a list of activities and exhibits that are easy on the eyes and ears.

The State Fair of Texas has released a list of 10 sensory-friendly activities across the fairgrounds. Organizers said the activities are listed in no particular order to avoid overcrowding. They recommend families select two or three activities on the list to do from 10 a.m. to noon and then head over to enjoy the Midway for an hour of rides and games.

There will also be quiet zones mapped out throughout the fairgrounds for families who need a moment of peace.

The usual lights and sounds of the State Fair of Texas will return at 1 p.m., so fair officials recommend families make their way off the Midway around 12:50 p.m.

Also, you have the opportunity to receive $5 admission to the fair! All you have to do is bring give canned food items on a Wednesday during your visit to donate to the North Texas Food Bank.
