Looking for a fun family activity this summer? Check out Morgan’s Wonderland, a theme park in Texas that’s designed with individuals with special needs in mind. It’s located in San Antonio and was opened in 2010 by Gordon Hartman, a dad who wanted to create a place where people with and without disabilities could come together.
Hartman thought of the idea after he saw his daughter, Morgan, wanting to play with other vacationing children at a hotel swimming pool, but saw the kids were leery of Morgan and didn’t want to play with her. Hartman wants to “bring together guests of all ages and abilities through the power of inclusive play,” according to the theme park’s website.
Morgan’s Wonderland offers over 25 accessible rides, playscapes, and interactive activities. You’ll find a wheelchair-accessible Ferris wheel, catch-and-release fishing, wheelchair swings, a carousel, a Sensory Village, and much more.
In addition to the theme park, there’s also Morgan’s Inspiration Island, which features five splash pads and a sensory-friendly boat ride. What’s unique about this island is that they provide waterproof wheelchairs free of charge for wheelchair users. They also offer waterproof bags for ventilators and O2 water-collar covers for guests who need to cover tracheas. The park has received recognition and was listed on the “World’s Greatest Places” list by TIME Magazine.
The best part is that Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island offer free admission to anyone with a special need, including intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities.
Morgan’s Wonderland is open from March to December, while Morgan’s Inspiration Island is open from May to September. It’s a fantastic opportunity for some quality family time this summer!
